Is Sixt Car Rental Any Good? (Top 3 Issues + Comparisons)
Sixt is a mid-size rental company that offers affordably-priced rates.
That said, its customer satisfaction is below-average across the review sites.
Is Sixt Car Rental Legit?
With approximately 2,000 locations in over 100 countries, Sixt is a legit car rental company with low daily rates and a great selection of vehicles.
Is Sixt Car Rental Part of Enterprise or Hertz?
Sixth isn’t part of or owned by Enterprise or Hertz car rental.
It is a German company that ventured into the US car rental market in 2011.
Is Sixt Car Rental Reliable?
While it isn’t US-headquartered like many other major US car rentals, Sixt is reasonably reliable, with transparent pricing in the online booking process, albeit with typical industry problems that customers face.
Sixt Car Rental Problems & Complaints:
#1 Upsells on Vehicle Upgrades
Seasoned renters will know that commission-driven upsells are common among car rental agents.
Still, several customers complained about the agent’s claims that the booked vehicles were unavailable, leading to pricier upgrades.
However, the make and model reserved was, in fact, available as the customer drove off the lot – they could be reserved for prepaid bookings, but still, clearer communication would help.
#2 Extra Charges for Car Damages
The shady practices of agents at some locations tarnishes the car rental’s reputation.
There are complaints by Sixt customers that, even though they did a walk around with the attending agent at drop-off and agreed that all was well, the customers still got hit with charges for damages.
These charges typically amount to hundreds of dollars a local workshop could fix for a fraction of what the rental company demands.
As oft-repeated, take photographs and video recordings when you return a rental vehicle in case the needs arise to fight a claim.
#3 Slow Processing at Pickup
Most car rentals experience staff shortages relative to the higher volume of customers during peak travel seasons.
Still, what angered Sixt customers that filed complaints was no agents attended to the long queue of customers for an extended period even though agents were in sight.
Though it could be weary counter staff working late into the night during peak holiday seasons, the onus ultimately lies on the company to ensure adequate staffing to meet the expected demands.
#4 Difficult to Get a Refund After Cancellation
Rental companies typically have a clear cancellation policy for prepaid and pay-later reservations.
However, some Sixt customers reported difficulty getting a refund even when they canceled a prepaid booking within the stipulated time, subject to cancellation fees.
Apparently, cancellations are only possible via the Sixt website.
Calls to the customer service line were to no avail as they couldn’t get hold of the right person to handle their case.
They had to resort to reporting the unethical business practice to the Better Business Bureau for a resolution to have any chance of recovering what was due.
#5 Insurance Upsells
Sales agents typically try to upsell the customers with add-ons like insurance and roadside assistance.
Such coverages are essential for peace of mind. However, in some cases, the extortionate per-day prices add up to more than the entire duration’s rental.
With these widespread practices across car rentals, customers can better guard against unscrupulous charges by ensuring their rental contracts do not have those add-on boxes checked.
Sixt vs. Other Car Rental Companies:

Sixt is a non-US headquartered rental company and not in JD Power’s annual satisfaction survey. Still, the Sixt vs. Alamo comparison tilts in favor of Alamo, which has above-average customer satisfaction.
However, Sixt has a comparable number of rental locations and lower rates than Alamo, so do not rule it out without first comparing their offers at the time of booking.
Sixt vs. Avis Car Rental
SIXT | AVIS | |
JD Power Satisfaction Study (830 industry avg.) | NA. | 826/1000 |

Although Sixt doesn’t have Avis’s reputation, it has lower rates, and the reservation experience on its website is smoother with upfront pricing.
However, both companies have subpar customer satisfaction levels, so you need to be extra careful with the add-ons when signing the rental contract.
Sixt vs. Budget Car Rental
SIXT | BUDGET | |
JD Power Satisfaction Study (830 industry avg.) | NA. | 807/1000 |
Relative Rental Rate (v low, low, moderate, pricey, exorbitant) | Low. | Moderate. |

The Budget against Sixt car rental comparison is too close to call as both do not enjoy high levels of consumer trust.
Still, Sixt’s advertised rates are usually lower than what Budget offers, making it the better choice for budget-minded renters, provided they pay attention to what they sign.
Sixt vs. Dollar Car Rental

Sixt and Dollar are comparable car rentals in multiple aspects.
Opt for Sixt over Dollar if you want lower car rental rates. Plus, Sixt provides an overall better booking experience on its website.

If you want cheaper rates, opt for Sixt over Hertz car rental, although you need to be careful that the rental contract you sign excludes add-ons you don’t want – verbally declining is often insufficient.
But if you can find attractive Hertz offers, it is worth paying extra for a more reputable service – service quality is agent and location-dependent, however.

Sixt Car Rental FAQs:
Does Sixt Car Rental Have Unlimited Miles?
Most Sixt rental cars come with unlimited mileage, except for some luxury vehicles and performance models like high-end sports cars and convertibles.
For vehicles with limited miles, Sixt typically imposes a 175-mile limit for every rental day (24-hour).
Does Sixt Car Rental Charge for Mileage?
For mileage-limited rental cars, the rate for additional miles that Sixt charges varies depending on the vehicle class and model, ranging from $0.55/mile to $0.87/mile – higher rental rates typically correspond with the extra mileage rate increase.
Does Sixt Car Rental Allow Pets?
Sixt allows pets in their rental cars.
However, renters must return the vehicle in clean condition and free of pet hair to avoid cleaning charges; Sixt does not disclose the cleaning fee amount during booking.
A unique Sixt provision that stands out is its waiver of a cleaning fee for renters with a service animal, an allowance that other rental companies do not provide.
Does Sixt Car Rental Allow Towing?
You cannot tow with Sixt rental vehicles.
Does Sixt Car Rental Allow Out-Of-State Travel?
All Sixt rentals originating from US rental locations must stay within the US borders.
For cross-border driving from one US State to another, these territorial restrictions apply (but always check with the specific rental location you’re renting from to be sure):
